Austrian photographer Robert Hupka, who died in 2001, had the opportunity to take thousands of unpublished photographs of Michaelangelo's "Pieta" during the New York World's Fair in 1964.
You can see some of the photos at his website. Here.
He was able to take photos from many angles and in a multitude of lighting conditions. He has photos of details that are rarely seen up close anymore due to the sculpture being behind bulletproof glass in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.
A selection of the photos are up on his website and I highly suggest taking a look. I am an artist myself, but taking in the fact that Michelangelo Buonarroti sculpted this magnificent piece out of a single piece of Carrara marble at the age of 25 just blows me away with awe.
The website is not in English, but easy to navigate to see the photos.
PIETA photos.
ENJOY!
